Marine Conservation Phi Phi has been part of Blue View Divers’ passion since we opened on Phi Phi Island in 2006.
What began with local community projects, cleanups & environmental education has grown over the years. Including Trash Hero , Coral Rehabilitation, Green Fins audits, citizen science and PADI AWARE conservation.
Our projects have evolved, but our commitment remains the same: to protect the marine environment we depend on. Also, to help more divers understand how they can be part of its future.
Marine Conservation efforts on Phi Phi has always been about community and not just the divers. Over the years, Blue View Divers has worked alongside local groups, other dive centres and volunteers. Including the Phi Phi Conservation & Business Community Groups and Trash Hero Koh Phi Phi.
Our manager, Caroline is also an active member of the Phi Phi Dive Committee, helping shape the safety and conservation side of the diving community.
These experiences form our approach today to work together, taking practical action and encouraging our divers and team to make responsible choices.
When Blue View Divers opened on Phi Phi Island in 2006, our ethos combined small-group diving, sustainable practices and working with the local community. Some of our earliest projects focused on education with local schools. Over the years, this developed into training and certification opportunities for local Thais and our staff. Therefore more people who call Phi Phi home could understand the underwater environment on their island. We even setup our own trash bins and collection on our local street!
As Blue View grew, so did our involvement in practical marine conservation on Phi Phi. Our team joined and organised cleanups, removing fishing nets and marine debris from beaches and dive sites. Cleanups became part of life at the dive centre. That same principle continues today through our Citizen Science Projects and PADI AWARE Dive Against Debris. Removing underwater rubbish can also generate useful data about marine pollution.
Regular Green Fins assessments since 2007, have helped us review the environmental impact of our dive operation. The team join our trip observing briefings, boat practices and how we and guests interact with the reef. We then identify areas to improve and changes.
Green Fins principles are part of our everyday operations. All our guests receive Greenfins materials during the digital signup process. Including including promoting good buoyancy, responsible wildlife interactions & photography etiquette.
We joined the Digital Membership Program and ask our dive team to complete the Green Fins Dive Guide e-Course. This training helps our team encourage better habits and more responsible diving.
Blue View Divers received the PADI Green Star Award, recognising our environmental practices and conservation activities. We moved beyond cleanups into education and citizen science. We became the first Shark Guardian Dive Centre on Phi Phi, introducing divers and snorkellers to shark conservation while supporting Shark Guardian awareness initiatives.
We also became involved with Spot the Leopard Shark, contributing sightings and observations to research into local leopard shark populations. This was one of our first experiences with citizen science. Want to get involved? Explore our Citizen Science Projects.
We introduced Shark Guardian Diver and Snorkeller programs and educational activities that helped guests understand the animals and ecosystems they were seeing around Phi Phi. Our guided eco snorkelling trips by Thai longtail boat developed this and this approach still influences our Private Longtail Tours and conservation diving today.
In 2017, Blue View manager Caroline and Natalie helped start the Trash Hero Koh Phi Phi chapter. For the next three to four years, they helped organise over 100 community cleanups, In addition, the chapter organised community events and campaigns against single-use plastics. Including the Trash Hero Bottle Project with FREE Water refill network on the island!
Our final major project was a six-week Pier Cleanup during the COVID-19 pandemic – an incredible collaboration between local divers, Blue View and The Adventure Club.
Blue View manager Caroline has been an active volunteer with the Phi Phi Dive Committee since 2017 serving in several roles including Chairperson and, currently, Secretary.
Apart from cleanup events, a major focus is afety standards for divers, boats and dive operators, with Phi Phi Diving Regulations being developed and adopted within the local dive community later reflected in wider Thai diving regulations and into law. Working together to improve safety, protect dive sites and support the Phi Phi community has always been an important part of what we believe a responsible dive centre should do.
When Maya Bay closed to tourism in 2018, it marked an important moment for marine conservation Phi Phi. Years of intense visitor pressure had affected both the beach and marine environment, and its closure created an opportunity for nature to recover alongside active rehabilitation work.
Blue View Divers was privileged to be involved; volunteering alongside local groups and Ocean Quest Global during this important period. Being part of the project also gave us a much deeper understanding of coral biology, restoration and the importance of combining conservation with better long-term tourism practices.
Our Phi Phi Marine Conservation work at Maya Bay developed into a friendship with Ocean Quest Global and its founder Anuar Abdullah. Anuar personally trained Caroline and Kris in coral propagation and rehabilitation.
We helped grow and maintain an Ocean Quest coral nursery. In addition to our test nursery at Nui Bay. Thus allowing us to put the techniques into practice on local reefs. These nurseries became practical training sites where we could monitor coral growth and teach divers about coral biology, reef rehabilitation and responsible propagation.
Yyou don’t need to run a major project to make useful contributions. Over time, our focus has expanded to citizen science, which gives recreational divers practical ways to record and contribute information during dives. Today this includes monitoring marine life and reef health, recording shark and ray observations and collecting information about underwater debris through PADI AWARE Conservation Specialties.
Discover how your own dives can contribute to marine conservation and research, even if you don’t sign up for the course!
After almost two decades of working with Green Fins standards, Blue View Divers was awarded Green Fins Gold Status in 2025, an important milestone in our conservation journey and recognition of the environmental practices we have worked to integrate into our everyday dive operations.
For us, the achievement isn’t the end goal. Green Fins continues to give our team a framework to review, learn and improve the way we dive, while helping us encourage every diver and snorkeller who joins us to reduce their impact on the marine environment.
Our Phi Phi journey has helped us achieve PADI 5 Star Eco Centre, but for us the recognition is less important than what happens every day.
We train our staff, integrate responsible diving practices into daily operations and foster good habits that divers can take with them wherever they go. Conservation is built into our briefings, courses, fun dives and snorkeling from improving buoyancy and respecting marine life to reducing contact with coral and contributing to citizen science.
Through Green Fins, PADI AWARE and our own experience of almost two decades of conservation on Phi Phi, we continue to learn and improve too.
