PADI Shark Conservation Course in Phi Phi

This specialty goes beyond simply seeing sharks underwater. You’ll learn more about the important role sharks and rays play in healthy marine ecosystems and how divers can become active participants in their conservation.

What Will You Learn?

During your PADI AWARE Shark & Ray Conservation course, you’ll learn about:

  • Shark and ray biology, behaviour and identification
  • Their importance to healthy marine ecosystems
  • Threats facing shark and ray populations
  • Responsible shark and ray diving practices
  • How to identify and record underwater encounters
  • How recreational divers can contribute to citizen science
  • The PADI AWARE Global Shark & Ray Census

How Does the Shark & Ray Conservation Course Work?

The course is easy to fit into your Phi Phi diving holiday and can even be incorporated into your regular fun diving or PADI Advanced Open Water Course.

1. Complete Your PADI eLearning

Complete your PADI eLearning in your own time before the course.

You’ll learn about shark and ray conservation, the challenges these animals face and how divers can contribute to their protection.

2. Join Your Classroom Session

Meet your instructor at Blue View Divers for your classroom presentation.

We’ll review your eLearning, introduce some of the sharks and rays you may encounter around Phi Phi and prepare you to collect observations during your dives.

3. Complete Two Conservation Dives

Head out with your instructor on a half-day, 2-dive trip around Phi Phi.

You’ll enjoy two regular Phi Phi dives while putting your new knowledge into practice. Use your Shark & Ray Conservation dive slate to identify and record sharks and rays you encounter underwater.

4. Become a Citizen Scientist

After your dives, we’ll review your observations together and record your findings with the PADI AWARE Global Shark & Ray Census.

Your observations can contribute to a global citizen science initiative helping us better understand and protect shark and ray populations.

What If We Don’t See Sharks?

Wildlife encounters can never be guaranteed and seeing a shark or ray is not required to complete your specialty.

The course is about understanding these animals, their habitats and conservation while learning the skills to collect observations whenever you encounter them.

Add Shark Conservation to Your Phi Phi Fun Dives

Already planning to fun dive in Phi Phi?

The Shark & Ray Conservation Specialty is easy to incorporate into your regular diving schedule.

Complete your eLearning and classroom session, then turn a regular 2-dive Phi Phi trip into your specialty dives.

You’ll still enjoy the reefs, walls and incredible marine life that make diving in Phi Phi so special, while learning to look at the underwater world from a conservation and citizen science perspective.

Same Amazing Diving, With More Purpose

Rather than simply looking for sharks, you’ll begin to understand their behaviour, habitat and role within the wider reef ecosystem.

And after completing the specialty, you can continue using your new citizen science skills on future dives around the world.
